Functions of Drilling Mud

2021-05-19

Summary: Functions of Drilling Mud (1) Flush the well bottom; (2) Carry cuttings; (3) Balance formation pressure; (4) Cool and lubricate the drill bit; (5) Protect the wellbore wall; (6) Provide downhole power.

Requirements for Drilling Mud

2021-05-19

Drilling circulation places the following requirements on drilling fluids: low pump pressure (low viscosity), strong cuttings-carrying capacity (high dynamic shear stress), low start-up pump pressure (low static shear stress), good lubricity, low friction, and minimal wear (due to a low solids content).

Functions of Solid Control Equipment

2021-05-19

Summary: Function—Control of Solid Content in Drilling Fluid. An increase in the solid content of drilling fluid significantly reduces mechanical rate of penetration and can even lead to drilling accidents, resulting in a substantial rise in overall drilling costs. Experimental evidence demonstrates that for every 1% reduction in solid content, the rate of penetration can improve by at least 10%, with smaller particle sizes having a more pronounced impact on mechanical rate of penetration. Therefore, the drilling fluid circulation system must be equipped with a drilling fluid purification unit.
